Theoretical Planets is a project George Colligan has been working on for a decade. Typically known as a virtuoso pianist and composer, Colligan has been demonstrating to jazz audiences for years that he’s also not just a capable drummer, but a master. As the bandleader of Theoretical Planets, he combines his depth of experience as a composer, drummer, and mentor.
With Zero, the band delves deeper into his sonic vision. Theoretical Planets offers the listener a diverse palette of approaches with some tunes being melodious songs sung by Zyanna Melada. Other times crafting dense and chaotic soundscapes that is both challenging and rewarding. Each track pushes the boundaries of conventional jazz. Colligan’s drumming is a tour de force of technique and wrought with a hard-driving rhythmic feel. He persistently drives the music forward with relentless energy. The horn section features Theoretical Planets veteran, Joe Manis, and Nicole McCabe and Noah Simpson, former students of Colligan’s. The rhythm section, anchored by Logan Kane’s bass playing, provides a solid foundation for the band’s explorations. Kane and McCabe are regular collaborators, and the chemistry is palpable. Two more former students of Colligan, Max Reynolds and Wes Georgiev appear as guests on a couple tracks, which further entrenches the concept Colligan has in including his pupils in on his creative process.
Zero is a bold and ambitious statement from Theoretical Planets. It’s a record that demands repeated listens to fully appreciate its nuances. It’s a thrilling ride for those who are open to sonic experimentation, but it is also a fun ride for those who like music that swings relentlessly and maintains a deep connection to blues and jazz traditions.
