Programming Philosophy

The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble (PJCE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation and performance of new jazz music. We are committed to hiring musicians, composers and collaborators who display high standards of artistry and musicianship, maintain professional behavior, hail from diverse backgrounds, and uphold the PJCE’s mission and values.

Hiring Process

The PJCE is always interested in learning more about the growing jazz community in the Portland area, so if you would like to let us know about you for future events, you are encouraged to follow these steps:

• Submit materials (e.g. resume/CV, bio, recorded examples, letters of recommendation, website link, etc.)
• Invite the Executive Director, AD, or board members to attend a live performance where we can assess your work
• You may be asked to arrange an in-person or Zoom audition with the AD

The PJCE’s hiring process is executed by the Artistic Director (AD). The AD selects musicians from a deep and diverse pool of Portland area musicians for each program, and uses the criteria below for consideration.

Musicianship

We seek musicians who have a strong command of their instrument and a deep understanding of jazz music. We are looking for musicians who are creative and versatile, and who are able to contribute to the ensemble’s unique sound. Improvisational skill is highly valued, but is not the sole criterion for selection. PJCE values musicians that can produce professional-level tone quality on their respective instruments, read music at a professional level, and execute rhythms accurately and precisely. Musicians that can play authentically in a variety of styles are also highly valued.

Professionalism

We expect our musicians to be professional in all aspects of their work. This includes being punctual, prepared, and respectful of their fellow musicians and the audience. The PJCE also values musicians that have experience playing in a large jazz ensemble, and composers who have experience writing for large jazz ensembles. We are also are willing to offer opportunities to less experienced individuals to help the community grow.

We believe that diversity is essential to the creative process. We are committed to hiring musicians from all backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. We want our ensemble, composers, and collaborators to reflect the diverse community in which we live.
