Programming Philosophy

The PJCE’s hiring process for musicians, composers, and collaborators is executed by the Artistic Director (AD). The AD selects musicians from a deep and diverse pool of Portland area musicians for each program, and uses the criteria above for consideration. Additionally, the AD aims to deepen the pool of musicians with whom we work by inviting more musicians to work with the PJCE when appropriate. The PJCE is always interested in learning more about the growing jazz community in the Portland area, so musicians are encouraged to submit materials to be considered for employment by following these steps:

  • Submit materials (e.g.: resume/CV, bio, recorded examples, letters of recommendation, etc.)
  • Invite the Executive Director, AD, or board members to attend a live performance where we can assess your work
  • You may be asked to arrange an in-person or Zoom audition with the AD

We are excited to continue our search for talented musicians who share our passion for newly composed jazz music by Portland area composers. We believe that the PJCE is a unique and special ensemble, and we are committed to creating a community where all musicians can thrive.

The Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble (PJCE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to the creation and performance of new jazz music. We are committed to hiring musicians who display high standards of musicianship, maintain professional behavior, hail from diverse backgrounds, and uphold the PJCE’s mission and values.

Musicianship

We seek musicians who have a strong command of their instrument and a deep understanding of jazz music. We are looking for musicians who are creative and versatile, and who are able to contribute to the ensemble’s unique sound. Improvisational skill is highly valued, but is not the sole criterion for selection. PJCE values musicians that can produce professional-level tone quality on their respective instruments (which includes intonation), read music at a professional level, and execute rhythms accurately and precisely. Musicians that can play authentically in a variety of styles are also highly valued.

Professionalism

We expect our musicians to be professional in all aspects of their work. This includes being punctual, prepared, and respectful of their fellow musicians and the audience. The PJCE also values musicians that have experience playing in a large jazz ensemble, and composers who have experience writing for large jazz ensembles. But we also are willing to give more experience to less experienced individuals to help the community grow.

We believe that diversity is essential to the creative process. We are committed to hiring musicians from all backgrounds, cultures, and perspectives. We want our ensemble, composers, and collaborators to reflect the diverse community in which we live.
