The band on Evil Twin is a double trio, with Ryan Meagher and Mike Gamble on guitar, Tim Willcox and Lee Elderton on saxophones, and Charlie Doggett and Tim Duroche on drums. The band members themselves are “evil twins” of each other, but you could think of the whole album as the evil twin to Ryan Meagher’s usual output as a straight ahead jazz musician. It’s the Mr. Hyde to the usual Dr. Jekyl.
The music itself is fragile, ethereal, yet still incredibly varied and nuanced. Fans of freely improvised music will be right at home with this release, but I encourage all of you to give this one a listen. Put it on late at night with your headphones, and let it move you someplace you didn’t expect.
I talked with Ryan Meagher about the album, you’ll hear my voice first.

If you want to support the kind of creative expression that is only possible with the help of an organization like this one, I want to encourage you to become a PJCE Sustainer. You can make a tax-deductible contribution of as little as $5 per month at pjce.org/sustain.
PJCE is very proud to be a partner of the Montavilla Jazz Festival. Now in its fifth year, this festival has turned into incredible opportunity to hear the very best of jazz being made right here in Portland. And there’s a reason for that. MJF has raised the bar for our scene by creating an new platform for local musicians to present their work for an adoring audience. They’re now a non-profit, and you can throw some clams their way by going to montavillajazzfest.com/donate. I’ve done it, and you should too.
This has been Beyond Category. I’m Douglas Detrick, Executive Director and Podcaster-in-Chief of the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble. This episode was produced by me, Douglas Detrick, along with some spot-on editing and mixing by Milo Fultz.
