Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble in Small Group Format

For one night only, the Portland Jazz Composers Ensemble strips down from its signature 12-piece configuration to present an intimate, revelatory evening of reimagined compositions at The 1905.

“Dig. Deep.” invites listeners on a journey through PJCE’s rich compositional history, carefully excavating gems from our decade-plus archive of original works. What began as expansive arrangements for full ensemble have been thoughtfully distilled to their essence, revealing new facets and unexpected nuances when performed in this smaller setting.

This special concert offers both longtime PJCE followers and newcomers alike a rare opportunity to experience these compositions from a fresh perspective. Without the density of a full ensemble, each musical voice takes on greater prominence, allowing individual improvisers to stretch out and explore the harmonic landscapes of these pieces with newfound freedom.

The music selected for “Dig. Deep.” represents some of the most adventurous and compelling works commissioned by PJCE over the years—compositions that balance sophisticated structural elements with emotionally resonant melodies. In their reimagined forms, these pieces honor the original composers’ visions while creating space for spontaneous creativity and in-the-moment dialogue between performers.

Join us at The 1905 for a fun Sunday evening hang. As you sip craft cocktails or enjoy artisanal pizza, you’ll be transported by performances that embrace both the intellectual depth and soulful expression that have become PJCE hallmarks.

“Dig. Deep.” celebrates not just PJCE’s musical past, but points toward its future—demonstrating how great compositions can evolve, adapt, and reveal new dimensions when approached with imagination and respect. Join us for this special evening as we unearth treasures from our repertoire and present them in their most essential, vibrant form.
